Yet another bullied teen has taken her own life — this time after she was outed as the victim of sexual assault, and her alleged rapist insulted her on Twitter.“And in a way the saddest part of her story is this: because she’s no longer around to testify, charges against her alleged rapist have been dropped.”
This is a fucking travesty.
There’s a line in Elizabeth Wurtzel’s book Bitch that I think is highly appropos of how I feel. I’ll paraphrase, cause I don’t know it by heart and don’t want to go through the book right now to find it, but essentially she says that If we were actually in a world where we supported women’s rights and women we wouldn’t try to hide the victims of assault as protocol—obviously they would be able to protect their identity if they wished or needed it for other reasons. Instead we would hide the identity of the attackers, because we would fear that they wouldn’t survive to the prosecution stage of their indictment.
I can’t tolerate or accept this bullshit. No one should ever be made to feel shame, much less to this degree, over being assaulted. It’s unacceptable and unreal.
